Erythrina verna (Mulungu) is an amazing tree with a long history of use in South America. The Erythrina species are used by the indigenous peoples as a strong sedative, said to calm the nervous system and induce pleasant sleep. Modern research shows that Mulungu contains at least 20 isoquinoline alkaloids, many of which are anti-inflammatory, sedative, and analgesic.
